ABOUT ME

Unveiling the Writer

To me, communication has always been more than informing an audience. Communication is about crafting a chord of empathy that bridges the divide between the information and its audience. How we reach audiences has changed because of social media, and right now, journalists need to be more flexible and fast-paced than ever. Social platforms drive the news and dictate what is important or “trending.” For this reason, I view my time spent working in indirect marketing as an asset to my portfolio. Marketing and mass communications forced me to think in a reader's mind and question how language would move audiences to act.

During my time at The Zebra, The Texas Tribune and McCombs Magazine, I’ve kept my finger on audiences’ pulses, developing skills such as social listening, clipping, media tracking, maintaining editorial recaps and building out media lists. I’ve learned to write press releases, pitch letters, biographies, op-eds and social content for corporate settings ranging from law firms to insurance to state universities. All the while, I worked closely on bridging the gap between the media and their audience. Through my education at UT Austin, I’ve developed a firm grasp of AP Style, newsgathering, reporting and research.
My degree provided me with the foundation of a strong journalist; my internships taught me about people – how they engage with one another, what they are feeling and why they care about individual stories. Now, I'm proud to be able to combine these skills and pursue what makes me happiest, writing. I'm a passionate, driven, often chatty personality seeking to cover the human story, whether at the United States-Mexico border or inside an emerging newsroom. People are always the focal point of my work. Want to know even more? Contact me at sloan.wyatt124@gmail.com or (678) 642-0782.
